The most popular forms in which skin care products available are lotion and cream. Have you ever confused about choosing a skin care product that has two forms, lotion and cream? What is the different between lotion and cream skin care, and which form is better?

In pharmaceutical science, both lotion and cream are emulsion form. There are two emulsion forms: water in oil based (w/o) form and oil in water based (o/w) form. Lotion is o/w form, but cream can be in o/w form or w/o form. In o/w form the ingredients are oil or diluted in oil and the opposite is w/o form.

The different between lotion and cream is their consistency. Cream is thicker than lotion. Beside that lotion sometimes contains micro powder ingredient and you must shaking well before using it.

For that reasons and these following explanations you can determine lotion or cream skin care you should use:

  1. What is your skin type? If you have dry skin, it is better you use cream skin care than lotion. If your skin is normal you can use lotion or light cream skin care. But if you have oily skin, the best is you use lotion.
  2. The application of skin care product. If you need product is not to be removed immediately after application cream skin care are preferred. But for toners and cleansing lotions seem to be preferred over skin care creams.
  3. Creams help in keeping the skin moist hence cream skin care in the form of moisturizers are most in demand.
  4. Eye and anti aging product are better in cream skin care form.
  5. Better choose cream skin care than lotion if you need vitamin A, vitamin E, and other active ingredient that you know they are soluble in oil.
  6. Acne and skin infection can also be treated by cream skin care specially infections where it has to be locally applied.
